WHAT DEMOCRACY IS

Democracy is taken from the Greek word ‘demokratia’ which means rule of the people. The term democracy originated from Athens in Greece.
Democracy is described by Wikipedia as a form of government that involves many parties’ elections, representative government and freedom of speech.
Democracy means a government in which all qualified citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect them. This form of government gives room for equal citizens’ participation directly or indirectly through elected representatives in the development, proposal and creation of laws. It entails economic, social and cultural conditions that afford the free and equal practice of political self-determination.

Basic elements of democracy
1.                 A political system for electing and replacing the government by free and fair elections
2.                 Active participation of the people in politics and civic life.
3.                 Protection of human rights
4.                 Rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens
The Role of a Citizen in Democracy
Ø     The major role of a citizen in Democracy is to take part in public life. Citizens have obligations to be informed about public matters, to observe how their political leaders and elected representatives use their powers, and to express their own opinions and interests.
Ø     Voting is another important role of a good citizen.
Citizens’ participation in public affairs also includes campaigning for a political party or candidate, debating, public matters, and attending community meetings, petitioning the government and even protesting.
If democracy is to work, citizens must not only participate and exercise their rights.  They must also observe certain principles and rules of democratic conduct.

People must respect the law and reject violence.  Nothing ever justifies using violence against your political opponents, just because you disagree with them.
